A thermostat that is stuck closed

What You Can Check After the Engine Cools
Once the engine is fully cool, check the coolant level in the reservoir against the marked low and full lines. Look for wet hoses, crusty residue around fittings, fresh puddles, or damage near the radiator. If the reservoir is empty, avoid simply filling it and resuming a normal commute. Low coolant means the system needs attention, even if the vehicle seems fine after adding fluid.
Also take note of the conditions when overheating occurred. Did it happen while idling, after an air-conditioning repair, during highway driving, or while carrying a heavy load? Did the heater blow cold air as the gauge rose? Was there a check-engine light? These observations can save diagnostic time and help prevent guesswork.
Avoid mixing coolant types unless the vehicle manufacturer specifically allows it. Coolant colors are not a dependable compatibility guide. Using the wrong fluid can reduce corrosion protection or create deposits in the cooling system. If you do not know what your vehicle uses, it is safer to have the system inspected and filled correctly.

An overheating diagnosis should go beyond topping off coolant and sending the vehicle back out. Diagnostic scan data can also reveal whether the engine temperature sensor is reporting accurately.
This approach matters because modern engines have tight operating tolerances. Repeated overheating can warp metal components, damage gaskets, degrade engine oil, and shorten the life of catalytic converters. Even one severe overheating event can cause damage that does not show up until later.

Can You Drive a Car That Has Been Overheating?
